Your websites popularity greatly depend on the value of your content. If you have an ability or special knowledge, then you'd need to pour them into making an interesting content. It can be in form of writings, video or image. Content is an asset for those who are connected to the internet. Of course not everything in internet can be considered as valuable. There are many junk contents out there.
There are some characteristic which define valuable content which we'll discuss in the following
Valuable Content
Content needs to have informative, entertaining and education value. There are machine generated contents, such as the usage of Markov Chain for example, but these types of content often considered as junk. Machines are incapable of generating original thought and they have nothing to convey. They only try to predict, imitate, and using probability. Thus the content generated by machine would not make any sense to human, and therefore it is useless. It can be interesting to what machine can come up with however, we can see the glimpse of it in /r/SubredditSimulator.
Content needs to be original. We live in Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) era where it criminalizes stealing copyrighted contents. If you have a website which only scraps content from other website, then you will get shut down eventually. For example, you copy news from BBC article which may draw 1000 visitors, and you might get 1-2 visitor from that. It may not seem much, but if there are 500 other websites doing the copying too, BBC would lose 500 visitors and it would mean that BBC would get less revenue, and they will send DMCA take down to those infringing websites.
Content needs to be easy to read. It means that you have to write content with good language, style, and grammar. A content worth reading usually is inline with SEO rules. You need to have at least 400 words in each of your post to be able to compete for top spot in Google search result. It also needs to have relevant keywords in your post. For every 50 words, you roughly needs one keyword, so you'd need 8 keywords in 400 words article. If your content is too short, you may get what Google call as thin content. Thin content has no value, and you will likely not be able to compete with top spot.
Thin Content vs Short Content
There are exception to the rules however. Google above all value quality contents. Short content doesn't always meant that you have thin content. A 2000 words article would be considered as thin content if it is just rubbish rumbling or machine generated. If you look at my other website about poetry, sofanmax.blogspot.com, some of the articles have less than 300 words, but they considerable have good ranking. For example this post about poetry titled as Aerosol Tears, it only has 140 words, less then the ideal SEO. However this post is original, that's why it can appears in top spot.
